Brace keeps Ramgeet in top five at Turf
PHOENIX, Arizona, (CMC):
Jamaican rider Andrew Ramgeet rode a double on the eight-race card here Wednesday, to remain in contention for the jockeys' title at Turf Paradise.
He scored in race three with
4-1 choice Piper's Purse before returning to win favourite with Sea Code.
With his latest success, Ramgeet continued fifth in the standings on 32 wins, four adrift of the fourth-placed Scott Stevens and 11 off leader Glenn Corbett.
He opened his account with a front-running effort in a mile trip, guiding six-year-old gelding Piper's Purse to a handsome 3 3/4-length victory over the four-year-old and upwards.
Ramgeet broke the gelding smartly and got him to the front, opening up a near two-length lead at the half mile run in 47.71 seconds, before gradually widening his advantage to reach the wire unchallenged.
His second win came in another gate-to-wire performance when he combined with four-year-old bay filly Sea Code to edge the four-year-old and upward fillies and mares by a neck, in 5 1/2-furlong sprint.
The pair posted fractions of 22.77 seconds for the quarter and drew off leaving the turn to open a three-length advantage in the stretch.
Longshot Minersingsthebluescame with a late run, but Sea Code held at the wire.
The seven-month Turf Paradise campaign wraps up May 6.
