Police Commissioner George Quallo has disclosed that one person is to be charged with the murder of police corporal Melvin Smith in Mandeville, Manchester late last month.

Speaking via his Twitter account yesterday afternoon, Commissioner Quallo did not say when the persons would be charged.

However, he thanked investigators for their hard work as well as members of the public whose support he said made the arrest possible.

Earlier this month, the police had reported that three men who were apprehended in Clarendon were to be questioned in relation to the killing of the corporal.

Corporal Smith was killed as he assisted a man who was robbed of his motorcycle on October 27.

He chased the robbers and a shoot-out ensued.

One of the men fell from the motorcycle and ran.

The second man reportedly shot the corporal.

He returned fire, injuring one of the robbers before he collapsed.

The policeman was taken to hospital where he died.
